Three hundred college radio stations around North America will band together and celebrate the first ever College Radio Day on October 11.
"College Radio Day is a day for us to just show off," said general manager, Jud Heussler. You may recognize Heussler as host of "The Morning Inferno."
College Radio Day was created to show everyone that college radio is not dead and it is just as prevalent as ever.
"Colleges can sell their radio stations for millions of dollars to private companies who can then do whatever they want with them," Heussler said, "Radio day is meant to bring back college radio and show that we are still a vital part of a college campus."
For those who have never tuned in to "The Morning Inferno" on 88.9 FM, they provide information key to the day such as weather, news and sports. They also have special segments that will brighten up any groggy, lazy morning. Such feature segments are "Spanish Lesson of the Week," Idiots in Crime," "Today in Idaho" and "The Yoga Minute."
"The Morning Inferno" will kick off College Radio Day. Not only will they be providing their regular amount of entertainment and music but they will also be giving away prizes all day.
College Radio Day was founded by Rob Quicke, a professor and general manager of WPSC FM at William Paterson University. Quicke wanted to raise awareness for all college radio stations and show America how important they are to the media world. The more listeners Fredonia Radio can get in October, the better contribution they can make to other radio stations.
Heussler explains that Fredonia Radio is considered the head quarters station for New York State and all the other college stations in the state look to Fredonia to contact and be close with national stations.
"For College Radio Day, we are not only trying to show off what we do daily but what we can do when we put our minds to it," said station manager, Sarah D'Hilly.
The participating college stations will all compete for the Spirit of College Radio award, a $1,000 spirit prize that will go to the station with the most listeners and most innovative College Radio Day Plans.
At 9 p.m. Fredonia Radio Systems and Music Industry Club will be collaborating and hosting an evening event to end College Radio Day in a big way. They will be showing two documentaries: PJ20 (about Pearl Jam) and the new Nirvana documentary. They will not be released to the general public for several weeks after the event. There will also be a special prize pack giveaway at the movie night.
There will be prizes that will be given away all day. Join the station at 9 p.m. in McEwen for the premiere of the Pearl Jam and Nirvana documentaries.
