For senior psychology major Chengcen Su, coming to college was a new experience in more ways than one.

As an international student whose first time in the United States was coming to Fredonia as a freshman, Su’s efforts are finally paying off as she graduates this May. She hopes to continue her education in graduate school next year. If that does not work out, she will return to Chongqing, China to be with her family.

While living in Fredonia, Su has become a big part of the college community. She is the current vice president and former president of the campus’s Chinese club, which she initially founded. She is also an active member in the Psychology and Foreign Language clubs and has volunteered at the Campus and Community Children’s Center.

Using her knowledge of psychology, Su hopes to one day open her own business in China. She wants to either open her own counseling center or to teach.

Surprisingly, Su claims that her senior year was easier than she anticipated. She said her junior year was a lot more difficult for her. From her experience, Su believes all students should know the importance of preparing for life after graduation. Whether it be creating a resume or applying to graduate school, the sooner you get started the better, she said.

As Su prepares for graduation, she does have a few regrets. She said she would have liked to “become more mature [sooner].” Besides the initial experience of being in the United States for the first time, Su said that another encouraging aspect has been “all the professors and friends here. I cherish them and they are important to me.”

Su has had a very positive effect on other students here. Junior communications major Zhuojun Fu believes Su has had a positive affect on everyone she has met. “Su is a very positive person,” she said, and added that Su was very encouraging of her and pushed her to become more involved in campus activities during her first year in college. She added that Su’s efforts helped her to become more self-confident.

Su is now waiting to hear back from graduate schools, which include Pittsburgh University, University of Virginia and Penn State among others. While finishing out her final semester at Fredonia, Su is preparing to move on to the next stage of her life.
