Support for gay marriage
The Student Association (SA) passed resolution R-30 which supports same-sex marriage in New York State. SA condemned the New York State Senate for rejecting a December bill that would allow same-sex couples to marry legally. A few members of the General Assembly (GA) felt the resolution conflicted with SA and it’s role with the school. SA President Kevin Wysocki assured GA that the passing of the resolution would not affect the way student government was run.
New SA position created
Resolution E-7 was passed unanimously. The resolution will eliminate the current position of Chairman of Student Housing and will create a position in the Department of Public Relations. The position will deal with the making and publication of flyers around campus. SA hopes the position will allow members to set up events as well as advertise them in a public forum. Megan Aller was announced as the head of the Department of Student Relations.
Stipend increase for executives discussed
There was a brief discussion over whether or not there should be an increase in salary for Executive Board members in SA. Students on the Executive Board make $80 dollars a week and Comptroller Brian Gusmano proposed a $10 increase for next year. Gusmano said the raise would put Fredonia on par with other student governments in the SUNY system. Concerns were brought up that increasing stipends would cause the Student Activity Fee to increase. SA members were worried that an increase would push the activity fee to its limit of $99. It was mentioned that the stipend increase would need 64 percent from the student body to pass.
SA Web site wins award
On April 17, during the bi-annual SA Conference in Saratoga Springs, SUNY Fredonia won an award for best SA Web site. Web services chair John Waring was recognized for his work on getting the SA Web site online.
