Athletes of the Week

Nick Guarino (Cross Country): Guarino finished second in 25:16 for 8,000 meters at the Dan Walker Invitational, hosted by Buffalo State, held Sat., Sept. 4, at Beaver Island State Park. His finishing kick took him past two other runners in the final 100 yards. The Blue Devils were second in the team standings, behind only NCAA Division II Edinboro. The only runner Gugino finished behind was also an Edinboro student-athlete.

Brittany Lis (Volleyball): The Blue Devils' setter, Lis was to the all-tournament team after leading the Blue Devils to second place, their best-ever finish in the Cortland Red Dragon Classic, a tournament the Blue Devils have competed in since 1997. She veraged 7.3 assists and 3.7 digs per set as the Blue Devils defeated Montclair State, St. Lawrence, and SUNY Cortland before falling to Lebanon Valley.

Round-ups

Cross Country

Grand Island, NY – The Blue Devil men's cross country squad finished second while the women placed fifth at the season-opening Daniel Walker Invitational. The men were led by twin brothers Nick and Josh Guarino, who finished second and sixth respectively. Sophomores Ryan Delaney, Jake Krautwurst and Adam Steves rounded out the Blue Devils' top five, finishing 15th, 21st, and 32nd, respectively.

For the women, freshmen Becca List, Lauren Truby and Gretchen Herb led the way for the Blue Devils. List finished ninth in her first race, while Truby and Herb came in 20th and 31st, respectively. Junior Amanda Solly and sophomore Kateri Walsh also finished in the top 50 for the Blue Devils, finishing 41st and 47th, respectively.

Volleyball

Cortland, NY – The Cortland Red Dragons Classic proved fruitful for the Blue Devils as they finished second overall in the tournament and went 3-1 overall. The Blue Devils opened the tournament on Friday with wins over Montclair State and St. Lawrence. They followed suit on Saturday by defeating the host Red Dragons 3-1 before losing the tournament final to Lebanon Valley. Sophomore setter Brittany Lis was the only Blue Devil named to the all-tournament team, collecting 34 assists and 14 digs in the match against Cortland. Junior Chelsea Senn had 12 kills against Cortland while senior Kaitlin Erdmann finished with 11.

Men's Soccer

Grantham, PA – The first weekend of the season could not have been worse for the Blue Devils as they lost their first two games and only tallied one goal. The Blue Devils were shut out on Friday by Franklin and Marshall 2-0 and were defeated by 2009 National Champion Messiah College the following day, 5-1. Senior Ryan O'Donnell scored the only Blue Devil goal of the weekend on a breakaway against Messiah goalkeeper Kyle Fulks at the 56:01 mark. The Blue Devils face No. 25 Medaille tonight at University Stadium. Kickoff is 7pm.

Women's Soccer

Salisbury, MD – The Blue Devils kept the momentum from Wednesday night's victory rolling during the first round of the Salisbury Tournament on Friday, winning the opening game against host Salisbury 1-0. They were then shutout on Saturday against Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 6 in the country, by a score of 5-0. Freshman Katie Kleine scored Fredonia State's lone goal of the tournament against Salisbury, the first of her collegiate career. Freshman goalkeeper Kayleigh Forger recorded the shutout on Friday for her second win of the season.
